Slow-speed train drives people in poverty areas of Daliang Mountains to well-being
2/21/2021

While high-speed trains in big cities continue to raise speeds, a green slow train still slowly shuttles through some areas of Daliang Mountains where people of the Yi ethnic group mainly live, serving the poverty reduction tasks in progress there.

China Media Group (CMG) recently produced a eight-episode documentary, Up and Out of Poverty, telling the inside story of China's success in poverty reduction. The story of the slow-speed train was included in the fourth episode "Collective Battle", which was aired by China Central Television (CCTV) on Sunday.

The old-fashioned train started operation in 1970. It runs between Chengdu City of Sichuan Province and Kunming City of Yunnan Province in southwest China.

The lowest ticket fare is only two yuan, which has not changed for more than 30 years. As it's a convenient and inexpesive way for local people to travel, many residents living in poor mountainous areas transported their agricultural products by the train and started their own businesses by selling the products.

To help the locals transport more products out of the mountains, half of the carriages have two rows of seats removed.

Seeing residents traveling with live pigs, chickens and sheep is not rare on the train.

Stewards of the train also help residents get the latest selling prices for their products.

It is the slow-speed train that helps the residents living in poor mountainous areas reach the outside world and move towards a wealthy life.
